Since 2012, AfDA has been helping Dekalb animals in big ways:

  • pushed for DeKalb’s bigger and better shelter

  • moved the county to become no-kill

  • helped pass laws that protect animals from harm

A lot has changed since then. The animals need us more than ever.

  • Our shelter is not big enough. Many animals are unable to be cared for and are killed for space.

  • Too many animals are bred. Many times this is against the law, leads to animal dumping, and unsafe streets for people.

  • The laws we have are not enforced.

  • Animal abusers get away with their crimes. Abused animals stay in the court system for years, and many of these animals die or are killed.

Today, AfDA supports the 5 Commonsense Solutions our members helped to pass in 2023. This plan will:

  • Create and enforce laws to stop harmful breeding and animal sales

  • Decrease the amount of time animals stay in the court system

  • Increase shelter space for DeKalb animals

  • Train and better pay more staff working for DeKalb animals

  • Offer help and resources for DeKalb pet owners, including spay and neuter
