Since 2012, AfDA has been helping Dekalb animals in big ways:
pushed for DeKalb’s bigger and better shelter
moved the county to become no-kill
helped pass laws that protect animals from harm
A lot has changed since then. The animals need us more than ever.
Our shelter is not big enough. Many animals are unable to be cared for and are killed for space.
Too many animals are bred. Many times this is against the law, leads to animal dumping, and unsafe streets for people.
The laws we have are not enforced.
Animal abusers get away with their crimes. Abused animals stay in the court system for years, and many of these animals die or are killed.
Today, AfDA supports the 5 Commonsense Solutions our members helped to pass in 2023. This plan will:
Create and enforce laws to stop harmful breeding and animal sales
Decrease the amount of time animals stay in the court system
Increase shelter space for DeKalb animals
Train and better pay more staff working for DeKalb animals
Offer help and resources for DeKalb pet owners, including spay and neuter
