“I am open to expanding the shelter to meet current needs. However, my goal is to identify ways to prevent overcrowding in the future so that further expansion is not needed. For example, intergovernmental agreements with neighboring counties, such as Gwinnett, that have underutilized facilities may be an option that is negotiable with the right leadership. Currently, there is a need for emotional support companions for those students, teachers and families impacted by the most recent shooting at Apalachee High School. Our pets add so much value to our lives and our communities, and we should provide environments where they can thrive. These are just a few examples of how we can work to reduce overcrowding in DeKalb, and as Commissioner, I look forward to having more conversations with experts and advocates on what can be done to keep our furry friends in loving homes rather than in overcrowded shelters.”
“While I support ensuring the passage and enforcement of a new breeding and sales regulation, it will take more consideration to draft a reasonable mandate for spay or neuter requirements. As the former Fur Mom of a blond Pekingese pup, I understand what it is like for a family to lose their Fur baby to old age, then have the honor to continue spreading the love to her pups. While we want to control overcrowding, breeding and sales, we have to be sensitive to those who have raised their pets for generations as they have raised their families.”

“The NACA recommendations are a great tool to help initiate this process. However, as a scientist, I understand that a study conducted by a national organization may not consider specific outliers that are significant to our specific community because they do not have the local knowledge to make any determinations. Therefore, it is important to recruit an expert Director to help determine the specific needs of the DeKalb facility based on experience.”
“I attended the most recent DeKalb Healthy Pets event hosted in part by Lifeline. The work and support that has been provided in this area is outstanding. I would be honored to continue these efforts annually. Great work!!!”
